Strengthening Governance at the Scaffolding Association Australia

The Board of the Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of the Association’s governance framework, policies and systems as part of its ongoing commitment to building a strong, transparent and future-focused organisation.

As SAA continues to grow and expand its role as the national voice for the scaffolding industry, ensuring robust governance is a priority. The Board has been working through a structured review process to ensure the Association’s governance framework is modern, clear and aligned with best practice for industry bodies.

This work forms part of a broader effort to ensure SAA is well positioned to support its members and the industry well into the future.

A Strong Governance Foundation

Earlier this year, SAA introduced a Board Member Handbook which outlines the responsibilities and expectations of Directors and provides a clear framework for how the Board operates. The handbook covers areas such as director duties, governance structures, risk management obligations, ethical conduct and board procedures.

Following the adoption of this handbook, the Board initiated a full review of the Association’s existing policy suite to ensure everything aligns with this governance framework.

Reviewing and Streamlining Policies

As part of the review, all current SAA policies were assessed to determine whether they remain relevant, and whether they relate to governance, compliance or operational management.

The policies support key areas such as:

  • ethical conduct and professional standards
  • risk management and governance oversight
  • complaints handling
  • privacy and legal compliance
  • workplace health and safety
  • social media and communication standards
  • anti-discrimination and workplace behaviour
  • information technology and acceptable use

A Clearer Structure for the Future

One of the key outcomes of the review has been the creation of a Governance Policy Register. This register provides a single, consolidated index of all SAA policies and their review cycles, ensuring policies remain current and are reviewed regularly as the Association evolves.

By clearly separating governance policies, compliance policies and operational policies, the Board is strengthening clarity and accountability across the organisation.

Building a Stronger Association

This governance review is part of a broader program of work being undertaken by the SAA Board to ensure the Association continues to mature as a national industry body.

Strong governance provides the foundation for everything SAA does — from advocating for the scaffolding industry, to delivering technical guidance, supporting members and representing the sector with regulators and government.

By investing time in strengthening governance structures, policies and systems now, the Board is ensuring the Association is well equipped to support members and the industry for many years to come.
