SAA Launches New Mast Climber Subcommittee – Expressions of Interest Now Open

The Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) is forming a new Mast Climber Subcommittee and is inviting expressions of interest from members who want to contribute to this important area of industry development.
What Are Mast Climbers?
Mast climbing work platforms (MCWPs), commonly known as mast climbers, are mechanically driven platforms that move up and down a vertical mast, providing access to building façades and other structures. Unlike traditional scaffold systems, mast climbers can be more efficient for high-rise projects or work that requires frequent vertical movement. They are commonly used in façade construction, maintenance, glazing, cladding, and restoration.
As mast climbers become more widely used across the country, the industry needs a coordinated approach to ensure consistent safety standards, appropriate training, and regulatory clarity.
Why Form a Subcommittee?
The purpose of the Mast Climber Subcommittee is to bring together industry stakeholders with relevant experience to:
Review and provide feedback on the draft Australian Standard for MCWPs
Examine current training and accreditation pathways
Develop an SAA Guideline for Mast Climbers to support safer and more consistent practices nationwide
This subcommittee is an important step in building shared understanding across suppliers, contractors, trainers, and users. It also supports SAA’s broader goal of lifting professional standards across all access systems used in Australia.
Meeting Schedule
The first two subcommittee meetings have been scheduled:
Meeting One – Friday 18th July – Brisbane
Meeting Two – Thursday 1st August – Sydney
Each meeting will include:
A short meet and greet
An overview of SAA’s objectives for the group
Review of the MCWP Australian Standards draft
Discussion around training and accreditation
Early development of an SAA Mast Climber Guideline
