QLD Member Meeting Highlights Compliance, Innovation and Connection

On Tuesday, 27th May 2025, the Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) hosted the Queensland Member Meeting at The Glen Hotel, bringing together industry professionals for a morning of insightful discussions and networking.

The event was a great success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Queensland Committee, led by Qld Chair Damian Boyce.

Key Topics and Discussions

The meeting featured a lineup of expert speakers covering critical industry topics:

  • Safe Scaffold Step Heights – Mark Norris and John Barber from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland provided clarity on the department’s new guidance regarding scaffold step heights, confirming they will be reviewing the current Safe Scaffold Step Height guidance document, and that the process will involve internal departmental consultation, followed by input from WHSQ’s engineering team, then input from the SAA before being re-released into the public again.

  • HR & Legal UpdateEmma Edwards from Edwards HR discussed recent HR developments affecting scaffolding businesses, focusing on sexual harassment laws and contractor misclassification.

  • Revenue through BrandingTiffany Stevenson from Sitemax explored how scaffolding companies can generate additional revenue by incorporating branded wraps and signage into their service offerings.

  • Stop the Drops Safety InnovationsGuy Pearce from Height Dynamics presented statistics on the frequency and impact of dropped objects and demonstrated a range of innovative tethering solutions from GRIPPS.

  • SAA Scaffold Design ProcessRob Thiess, SAA National Chair, provided a progress update on the SAA Scaffold Design Process standardisation, aiming to create consistent national guidelines for scaffold design documentation.

  • SAA National UpdateErryn O’Brien, General Manager, delivered a national snapshot, including the SAA’s current goals, launch of the 2025/26 Partnership Program and planning for the 2025 SAA National Conference and awards night in Sydney.

  • Ground Conditions Discussion – Damian Boyce led a practical discussion on assessing ground suitability and interpreting engineering reports to ensure scaffold stability.

The session concluded with a networking opportunity, allowing members to connect and discuss the day’s topics further.

Strengthening the Queensland Scaffolding Community

This meeting reaffirmed the SAA’s role as a driving force in the scaffolding industry, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
