The Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) is very happy to announce that we have received confirmation from Standards Australia that we now have a participating member seat on the BD-092 Temporary Edge Protection Committee.

The BD-092 Temporary Edge Protection Committee is a technical committee established by Standards Australia, the nation’s peak body for developing standards.

This committee focuses on the development and maintenance of standards related to temporary edge protection systems. These systems are used in construction, maintenance, and industrial activities to prevent falls from heights and ensure worker safety.

Key Functions of BD-092:

  1. Standards Development:

    • Create and revise standards that outline the requirements for designing, testing, and installing temporary edge protection systems.

    • Ensure compliance with safety, durability, and usability criteria.

  2. Harmonisation with International Standards:

    • Align Australian standards with global benchmarks, such as ISO or EN standards, to support interoperability and safety best practices.

  3. Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Collaborate with industry professionals, manufacturers, engineers, and safety experts to address emerging risks and innovations.

  4. Regulatory Support:

    • Provide guidance to meet or exceed workplace health and safety (WHS) laws and regulations in Australia.

  5. Risk Mitigation:

    • Address specific hazards related to falls from roofs, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms by setting performance and testing criteria.

The committee plays a vital role in safeguarding workers by ensuring that edge protection systems are effective, reliable, and compliant with evolving safety needs.

If you’re working in scaffolding or construction, understanding and adhering to these standards is essential for legal compliance and maintaining workplace safety.

The SAA will use our membership base to provide us with feedback on any Australian Standard that relates to temporary edge protection so that the standards that impact the scaffolding industry are reasonable and consider the opinions of our scaffolding company members.

We are very pleased to now have participating member seats on both the BD-036 Scaffolding and BD-092 Temporary Edge Protection committees, meaning our members are kept up to date and have influence over standards that relate to our industry.
