Batman Bridge Stage 2

The Benchmark Scaffolding project involved the installation and dismantling of scaffolding for the Stage 2 works on Batman Bridge.

This project was unique due to the scaffolding being suspended 60 meters above the bridge deck, supported by a custom-fabricated grillage bolted into the bridge’s structure.

The installation utilized helicopters to lift the scaffolding into position in three parts, allowing for a complex design that followed the curvature of the bridge mast. Electric winches facilitated the movement of scaffolding materials from an overhead gantry, ensuring that the road beneath remained open throughout the operation.

Following the completion of the initial scaffolding, independent swing stages were hung from the grillage to accommodate painting, requiring precise programming and calibration of motors to manage their operation at varying speeds.

Challenges

  • Height and Suspension: Managing scaffolding installation at a height of 60 meters above the bridge deck.
  • Logistics of Installation: Coordinating helicopter lifts for precise placement of scaffolding components.
  • Dynamic Load Management: Programming electric winches to lift and lower materials while maintaining road access.
  • Calibration of Swing Stages: Ensuring motors operated at different speeds due to the angle of ascent and descent.

Outcomes

  • Successful Installation: Scaffolding was installed safely and efficiently, facilitating subsequent works on the bridge.
  • Minimal Disruption: The overhead gantry system allowed the road to remain open, minimizing disruption to traffic.
  • Innovative Techniques: The use of helicopters and custom grillage showcased innovative engineering solutions in scaffold design.
  • Team Collaboration: Strengthened teamwork and collaboration among all participants involved in both stages of the project.

Conclusion

The Benchmark Scaffolding project was a remarkable achievement that highlighted the effectiveness of innovative engineering and strategic planning.

By overcoming significant challenges, the project not only ensured the successful installation of scaffolding but also maintained accessibility to the bridge throughout the process.

The collaboration and dedication of the team involved in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 contributed to a memorable experience, leaving a lasting impact on all participants.
