Mount Henry Bridge Mobile Scaffold
Scafwest were tasked with the design and construction a mobile scaffold for access to the soffit for painting of Mount Henry Bridge.
Challenges
- Only a 225mm void along the bridge length to drop through
- Required 3m cantilever
- Limited to one side of the internal bridge due to cable trays and posts
- Total length of 660m
- Excessive counterweights made the mobile unit immovable
- Inconsistencies along the bridge structure
- Movement in the bridge between voids
- Working over water
- Moving the unit with a person on it
- Access on and off the unit
- Public access protection requirements
- Engineering parameters pushed to capacity
- Development of a rescue plan
Outcome
- Delivered the project in a timely manner
- Innovation saved the client from the cost of scaffolding the entire length
- Achieved engineering precision
- Incorporated aluminum components such as ampligrip grating
- Fabricated components, including a wheel on a bearing to fit between the void
- Developed a system to move the mobile unit in the internal void without removing counterweights
- Client was amazed and extremely pleased with the result
The successful design and construction of the mobile scaffold for the Mount Henry Bridge project demonstrated Scafwest’s commitment to innovative problem-solving and engineering excellence.
